It’s not a question of whether we feel the affects of aging and degenerative disc disease is just another thing to add to the list. Degenerative disc disease, also known as spondylosis, is a disease that affects the spinal cord and vertebrae in the back. It can become extremely painful and possibly lead to herniation. So what exactly causes degenerative disc disease?

The longer we live, the more the water and protein content begins to change in our body’s cartilage. With this change, our cartilage becomes weaker and much more fragile to things. The vertebra in our back consists of discs and joints that are composed of cartilage. As our back feels the simple wear and tear of a normal day, it begins to deteriorate and make degenerative changes over time. Degenerative disc disease is the gradual deterioration of the disc directly between the vertebrae.

Degeneration disc disease will cause an array of different pains from pain in the affected area to any level of the spine. It will vary by the amount of activity that you proceed to do and how often you do things that affect the area. Having spondylosis makes a person much more susceptible for herniation as well.

A common misunderstanding of degeneration disc disease is the affects it will have on you over time. Many see degeneration and fear that the pain will worsen over time when in fact it is just the opposite. It is true that the disc will continue to slightly degenerate over time, but the lower back pain caused from it will not worsen over time and will in fact become slightly better.

Over time, everyone will begin to age and certainly feel the affects of it. Disc degeneration is a natural part of aging, and over time all people will notice changes in their discs. The symptoms and pain, however, will vary from person to person with how severe it can get. Just know there is no need to worry too much as disc degeneration disease is not necessarily a disease, but rather a degeneration that can cause pain from a damaged disc.

There are a few different methods to treat degeneration disc disease. It is generally treated lightly with intermittent heat, lots of rest, and rehabilitative exercises to work the area out and strengthen it. If the pain becomes worse you can take medication to relieve pain, muscle spasm, and any sort of inflammation.

Disc degeneration disease is a common “disease” with people as they begin to age. There is nothing too major to worry about, as you should be able to maintain your normal life with the capability of some light activity depending on the severity of your pain. Just remember, you’re not the only one in the world that feels the affects of disc degeneration disease so try not to stress out too much.

Back pain occurs due to various causes, and there are various effective back pain treatment options, which in 90% of cases, can rid the pain quickly.

However, proper medical advice and treatment is essential in cases where the pain persists for a long time.

Back pain related treatment is effective if the exact cause is identified. The severity of back pain may vary from a dull ache to searing feeling.

It may be due a strain in the muscles or an injury or problems like Osteoarthritis, arthritis, bone fracture or tumour or some infection. Although back pain may emerge suddenly, it may be caused by a problem, which has plagued us for a long time.

It is essential that we identify the true cause of the back pain, if we want to eliminate or treat it fully.

The More Popular Back Pain Treatments

A number of back pain treatment options are available for people suffering from back pain.

However, the treatment may vary from person to person depending on the cause or the reason for the back pain. The exact nature of the pain and its severity can be judged by a specialist who will than suggest the most appropriate treatment.

Exercising is the best back pain treatment. It is a general notion that bed rest is the best cure for back pain. But evidence has shown that rest does not aid in the recovery of a person suffering from Back pain.

It is much better if one carries on with normal activities while taking some measures for relieving the pain. The most recommended exercises for curing back pain are short walks, stretching exercises and swimming. However, it is advisable that one starts slowly and than gradually builds up the speed at which the various exercises are undertaken.

Application of a cold pack or a bag of ice to the back is also often recommended by the doctors. This form of back pain treatment is generally used within the first 48 hours after the start of the back pain. A cold pack is generally applied for 5-10 minutes. Ice reduces the inflammation and swelling, numbs soft tissues, and slows nerve impulses in the injured area.

A large number of drugs are also used as back pain treatment that reduce the pain and are easily available in the market. However, many of them can have serious side effects and so should be taken only after consulting a physician. Several non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Naproxen®, Ketoprofen® are capable of reducing pain.

These anti-inflammatory medications help in reducing the swelling and inflammation while healing the injured portion. Acute or chronic back pain may be treated by an anticonvulsant or an oral steroid.

Epidural Steroid injections are also effective in reducing the inflammation and the treatment of back pain caused by spinal stenosis, disc herniation, and degenerative disc disease. A steroid is injected directly into the membrane that surrounds the nerve roots (dura). Other forms of back pain treatment include the massage therapy, the electrotherapy and the adjustment of the spine Chiropractors and osteopaths.

Acupuncture may also prove to be effective in some cases. Finally surgery may be recommended in cases where the pain is not curable by any of the other forms of treatment.

Upper Back Pain: Identification & Some Helpful Solutions

Upper Back Pain is as painful or troublesome as the pain in the lower back or the neck.

An injury or a strain is the most common reason for the pain in the upper portion of our backs. Although back pain in upper portion is not a common phenomenon, it can cause significant discomfort and needs to be treated carefully.

The identification of the exact cause is necessary to treat the pain in the upper back. Muscular irritation and joint malfunction have been found to be the most common causes of upper back pain.

An injury or a poor posture can also result in upper back pain. In recent years, it has been found that people sitting in one posture for example working in front of the computer are more prone to suffer from this type of back pain. Lack of activity or poor strength of our muscles is a very common cause of upper back pain and can be treated through chiropractic cure, acupuncture, massage, physical therapy and various types of stretching exercises.

Again an injury or strain in the joints between the ribs and the upper back can result in severe pain. Such a situation can be rectified by exercises aimed at strengthening the muscles and loosening the back.

Upper Back Pain Causes

A ruptured disk or a degenerative disk disease can also result in back pain in upper part. An appropriate posture and regular strengthening exercises are a must for avoiding the pain in the upper back.

A poor posture can lead to weak muscles and a strain in our joints and ligaments and thus cause upper back pain.

Osteoporosis, a disease which makes ones bones fragile and weak, a rupture in the spinal disk or any other form of injury can also result in back pain.

People suffering from heart disease can also experience pain in the upper back. Such people need to consult a specialist so as to avoid any complexities. It is important to get proper medical treatment if the cause of your upper back pain is Osteoporosis, a ruptured disk or any other injury.

However, if the pain is caused by a poor posture or a strain, we can take some self remedial action such as massaging the area of pain. Pain in the Trapezius or the triangle shaped muscles of the upper back and the shoulder blades can be rectified through self massage or massage by somebody else.

Also try to concentrate on improving your posture and sit straight instead of slouching. A poor posture eliminates the natural, weight-supporting S curve in our backs and weakens them. In contrast a right posture- chest out, stomach in, and buttocks tucked under- helps one to restore the S curve in our back.

Proper exercises can enable one to rectify his/her posture. Proper massage by a physical therapist, use of acupuncture techniques and physical therapy also go a long way in relieving upper back pain

Upper back exercises are a good way of strengthening the upper back, and prevent the onset of upper back pain. The back supports the weight of the upper part of the body and has to be strong enough to carry out its work unhindered. People focus on strengthening their lower back to avoid back pain, but upper back muscles too need toning up.

A well toned back looks good and helps in maintaining correct posture. Some effective exercises are mentioned below.

Women would rather have a well-toned upper body, whereas men prefer a muscular back.

Basic Upper Back Exercises

Dumbbell pullovers and dumbbell rows are effective upper back exercises for both men and women.

Dumbbell Pullover: You need a narrow workout bench for this exercise. Lie with the workbench supporting the upper back and neck, and your head leaning over one end.

Place one leg each on either side of the bench with feet firmly placed on the ground.

Lift the dumbbell over your face with arms stretched out. Slowly lower the dumbbell over your head in an arc; hold, and bring it back to original position.

Initially do five repetitions and gradually raise the count to fifteen.

Another variation of this upper back exercise is to hold the dumbbell with bent arms.

With elbows bent, slowly lower the dumbbell over your head in an arc; hold, and then gently pull back the dumbbell to original position. Initially do five repetitions and gradually raise the count to fifteen.

Dumbbell Row: Place the dumbbell on the right side of the bench, and your left leg on the bench with the right foot firmly placed on the floor.

Leaning forward, place the left hand on the bench in front of the body. Your back should be in horizontal position. Pick up the dumbbell and raise your arm slowly upwards until your upper arm is in level with your upper body; hold, and take back your arm to the original position.

Initially do five repetitions and gradually raise the count to fifteen. Now, repeat the exercise with the left arm.

These Upper back exercises are a great way to build a strong upper back that helps add to the ‘V’ shape of the body.

Sciatica & Back Pain - 7 Things You Can Do To Stop It!

The Good News is that by doing the right back exercises in the right way, you have a great chance of stopping your sciatica and back pain and keeping your back healthy and strong.

Even if your back already hurts, or is strained, there is a good chance that you can make it better. (Note: If you’re sick, or your back really hurts and you think you’ve injured yourself, make sure you see a health practitioner first.)

The Not-So-Good News If you don’t exercise reasonably regularly, especially as you age, the muscles supporting and surrounding your back will eventually get weak and stiff. Then these muscles won’t be able to work well enough when you most need them to - when you put a strain on your back.

This means it’s much more likely that your will injure your back when you do place a strain - even a small strain - on it. Your back can get injured from an action as simple as reaching for something on your desk, or from a more obvious strain such as lifting something heavy, especially if your posture is bad as you do it.

Why Back Problems Tend to Hang Around Your back is a complicated mechanical system with many moving parts. This is why the condition of the surrounding muscles is so important in supporting it and holding everything in alignment.

Studies have shown the muscles that provide support to your back behave differently to other muscles. The key difference is that they are slower to automatically “switch back on” (i.e. return to their previous level of function) after an injury or a strain. Unless they are triggered by exercise, they can take a long time to return to their previous level of function.

Worst case without the right exercise, they may never return to full function and so your back doesn’t get the support it needs.

When these supporting muscles are working properly, they respond to signals from your brain by clenching or bracing fractionally before a strain impacts your back.

This means your back is supported as the strain arrives and so the chance of (further) injury or strain is reduced.

When this mechanism is not working properly and the muscles don’t trigger, your back is left unsupported and thus you are more likely to re-injure or strain your back. This is why back problems can be so difficult to get rid of once you start having them and why you can suffer from recurring back problems. This is also the reason regular exercise is so important - it helps to keep your supporting muscles active and able to do their job.

7 Simple Things You Can Do To Help Your Back

1. Stand upright and pay attention to posture – don’t slouch.

2. Sit upright at your desk with your lower backslightly curved. Don’t slump in your chair or hunch over your keyboard. Set your workstation up correctly – screen at eye level.

3. Change your position frequently. Get up and walk around every 20-30 minutes even if it’s only for 30 seconds.

4. Eat healthily and manage your weight. Extra weight, especially around your waist, strains your back. A simple diet with a good selection of fresh foods is one of the keys to overall health.

5. Do specific back strengthening exercises. (Find out about the Better Back System).

6. Also exercise to strengthen your stomach and ‘core’ muscles which help support your back.

7. Push rather than pull heavy objects. If you’re lifting something heavy, use your leg muscles and hold it close to your body. Don’t bend over and strain your back.

We recommend the Better Back System which you can try this at home to see if it works for you without any risk. It uses a set of special exercises that you can do at home in about 5 minutes a day with a 97% chance of success and without having to trek to the gym, or fill your cupboard full of equipment. There’s no mystery really! When you take action on a few key things, you’re on the road to a better back, ending your back pain and sciatica and ensuring good health.

The author’s back has put up with fifty years of football and falling off bikes, among other things. Read his tried and tested exercises for a healthy back without pain and without medication at http://www.sciaticacenter.com

Sciatica Exercises:The Secret To Eliminating Sciatica & Lower Back Pain

One of the best ways to rid yourself from lower back pain is by doing sciatica exercises.

But firstly, it is important for you to know that there are specific exercises for sciatica, so it is crucial that you seek professional advice to find out what exactly is wrong so you can avoid stretching the wrong way and making the situation worse.

First off we need to know what sciatica is.

Sciatica is a symptom as opposed to a diagnosis. It refers to pain in the lower back region and down through the buttocks and legs, caused by irritation to the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica is often caused by a herniated or Ruptured disc. It is proven that by performing sciatica exercises, you stand a far greater chance of a rapid recovery, rather than resting.

In fact bed rest will make your situation worse - as the muscles in you lower back become stiff and less mobile. Taking a couple days off of work is usually OK - and recommended - as after the initial pain begins from sciatica, either sitting for long periods, lifting, twisting and many other day to day activities will aggravate the situation. However, further rest will only cause more pain as opposed to any sort of recovery.

Fix Your Back With Sciatica Exercises

The reason it is crucial to get in sciatica exercises is to keep the muscles conditioned.

The longer you do not exercise the lower back muscles, the weaker the muscles will become, and in turn will make it more difficult for these muscles to support your spinal structure.

So what sciatica exercises should you do? Well that’s not a question that can be easily answered here, as every person is different - plus the symptoms and pain vary from person to person.

One of the best resources for diagnosing your specific problem, and teaching you the exact sciatica exercises is the Lose The Back Pain program from The Health Back Institute.

The program comes in the form of a 65 page manual, and an instructional DVD.

You will discover how to pin point your exact problem through a series of tests, and then show you the exact stretches and exercises that you need to do to get rapid pain relief, and then eliminate your sciatica once and for all.

If you would like to know more about the Lose The Back Pain program, you can visit their website by following the link below. http://losethebackpain.com

One of the best ways to avoid reoccurrences of sciatica, is to start a regular light exercise program. A combination of non impact aerobic exercises, such as a cycling on a stationary bike, or swimming, combined with light resistance training, and a good stretching program, which are targeted to the muscles in your lower back.

Add in some abdominal exercises and you will have a training program that will armour plate your back and eliminate sciatica for good.

This can happen for many reasons but the main reasons is because of a herniated or prolapsed disc, which causes the muscles in the lower back area to spasm or tighten which irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve.

To achieve pain relief you simply need to reduce the inflammation of the nerve and stop the spasm in the muscles.

Here are our three top tips for rapid pain relief.

Sciatica Pain Relief Method 1 - Hot And Cold Pack Treatments. A cold pack applied to your lower back in the acute stages of sciatica (first 6 days) will help reduce the inflamed nerve. After this time you should alternate with hot and cold, for approximately 1 minute each for 10 minute periods.

An economical way of using this Sciatica Pain Relief Treatment is to use a packet of frozen peas from the freezer and a hot water bottle. Ensure that you wrap both of these in a towel to prevent any damage to your skin.

Sciatica Pain Relief & Treatment

Sciatica Pain Relief Method 2 - Anti Inflammatory Treatment Anti-inflammatory products are arguably the fastest way for sciatica pain relief.

There are many anti-inflammatory drugs available over the counter at your local pharmacy, the most popular being ibuprofen. Your doctor may prescribe a more powerful anti-inflammatory such as Naproxen, or Tylenol, however the latter is a pain killer and will not reduce the inflammation, so you are only really masking the problem.

A far better choice of fast relief from Sciatica would be the 100% natural back relief remedy from The Healthy Back Institute

This is a proven remedy for rapid relief of Sciatica and many other back pain related ailments. 1000’s of former back pain sufferers swear by this product and whats more, in the unlikely event of it not giving you pain relief, just return the empty bottle, and they will refund you 100% - no questions asked. Just try that at your local pharmacy!

Sciatica Pain Relief Method 3 - Deep Tissue Massage. When the Sciatic Nerve becomes inflamed the actual pain that you are feeling is caused by your muscles going into spasm and becoming unbalanced.

This will not just effect the muscles in your lower back area, you may find that you have stiffness and discomfort in your buttocks, mid and upper back areas and even in your shoulders.

When your muscles get tight, they will not start to behave properly until they are released. A deep tissue massage by a qualified sports or physical therapist will release the tension and knots from your muscles.

This treatment will also prevent Fibrosis - A build up of scar tissue on the muscles - which if allowed to build up will lead to stiffness and hunching in our later years.

If you’re curious to whether you have sciatica symptoms, you’re probably right - you have!

How can I be so sure? Well frankly I can’t - not 100% anyway, but nearly all lower back pain complaints will give you sciatica symptoms.

Let me explain-:

Whether you have a serious back problem, suffered an injury, or maybe lifted something heavy and sometimes - for no reason whatsoever - there are just some days when you wake up with crippling back pain.

The pain that you are actually feeling 90% or the time is due to a muscle going into spasm which in turn irritates and inflames the sciatic nerve and therefore giving you symptoms of sciatica.

The sciatic nerve, exits the base of the spine, runs through your buttock into the back of the thigh, round to the shin, top of your foot and into your big toe and pain can be felt anywhere along the path of the nerve.

So what are sciatica symptoms? The most obvious symptoms of sciatica are pain to the right or left side of your lower back as the muscle goes into spasm. This will usually stop you from standing up straight, plus the pain will often radiate into the buttock, and is also usually more apparent when sitting or standing for long periods of time.

Understanding The Symptoms Of Sciatica

The reason for the pain becoming apparent in these positions is due to holding a poor posture, due to your muscle spasm.

Other sciatica symptoms are numbness and tingling, pins and needles, and crawling sensations, all of which can occur anywhere along the path of the nerve.

The numbness can cause weakness in the legs and you may also find in some cases that you have a lack of movement in your toes.

Sciatica symptoms and the degree of pain vary from person to person. Some people will feel little pain and it will come and go, and for others, the pain can be almost unbearable day and night.

Now as I said earlier sciatica symptoms are only that, symptoms. it is important for you to find out exactly what is causing the muscle to spasm and the sciatic nerve to inflame, and it is strongly advised that you seek professional advise from your doctor who will probably arrange for an MRI scan.

The results of the scan will tell you exactly why you have symptoms of sciatica and then you will be able to start the treatment for the pain, which is usually as simply as lower back strengthening and stretching exercises.

The good news is that Sciatica is rarely due to anything serious, such as a tumour or a blood clot. In many cases however, it can be caused by a herniated disc.

If this is the case then this will be picked up by the MRI scan.

Although a herniated disc not life threatening, it is a condition that will need treating, to prevent the situation worsening over time, however it is unlikely that any surgical treatment will be required.

If you have a burning pain in the buttocks, in the back of the leg, in the top of the foot and into your big toe, you may be actually surprised to know that you may require sciatica treatment. This is because the symptoms are those of a back pain complaint called Sciatica.

Often the sciatic nerve which exits the base of the spine can be pinched or have pressure against it, due to a muscle spasm in your lower back, this can cause painful sensations and numbness anywhere along the path of the sciatic nerve.

The pain is usually felt on one side of the body, but in some rare instances both sides. Sciatic pain felt on both sides of the body is called bi-lateral sciatica and is very rare. Trying to treat the areas in your buttocks and legs will not fix the problem, specialist sciatica treatment is required.

Sciatica treatment includes pain relief generally in the form of anti inflammatory drugs and pain relief medication. Reducing the inflammation around the nerves is important as this is what is going to take the pressure off of the nerve and relieve sciatic pain.

Many people suggest resting as a solution for sciatica; this is not good practice as a sedentary lifestyle is highly likely to have been the initial cause of your back pain, and resting increases future risks of back pain and back injury. In fact one of the best forms of sciatica treatment is by keeping active and practicing sciatica exercises.

Physical therapy and massage therapy can also be done. These therapies will give relief from sciatica pain. Often heat and ice are used in physical therapy to reduce inflammation and to stimulate the nerves in the back. As blood flow increases to the affected area pain flare-ups are temporarily relieved. Heat or ice therapy can be done prior to sciatica exercises; this will decrease pain enough for initial exercises to be done.

Sciatica Treatment & Exercises

As with most exercises, performing sciatica exercises correctly is important. Sciatica exercises should begin with a light non-impact aerobic exercise program that will strengthen, and increase flexibility to the muscles supporting the lower back.

Using a Cross Trainer, swimming, and riding a stationary bike are all excellent forms of exercise, as these are non-impact and will not cause additional stress to your already painful back. In addition to this, stretching and flexibility exercises for the lower back should be implemented.

As well as these direct sciatica treatment exercises you should also target the abdominal muscles, hamstring and oblique muscles.

To strengthen these muscles you need to start slowly and don’t push yourself further than your pain will allow.

A simple and effective sciatica relief exercise you can try is to start by lying flat on your back and gently raising your knee towards your chest to stretch. You can use your arms to help pull your knees if necessary. Hold for 10 seconds and slowly lower your feet to the floor. Repeat 5 times. This should not be done to the point of pain, if you are experiencing pain with these exercises you might want to start by using a heat compress on your lower back before beginning any exercises, this will warm the muscles and get the blood flowing through them.

For details of further sciatica treatment exercises, I would recommend that you look at the Lose The Back Pain program from The Healthy Back Institute. This program has helped 100’s of people in their quest for sciatica treatment and many other back pain complaints. It helps you identify your particular symptoms and then shows you how to perform the exact exercises to give you rapid and ongoing relief by way of DVD and a comprehensive manual.
